Biography for Stanley Tuttleman

Stanley C. Tuttleman

Philadelphia born, educated in public schools and a graduate of the University of Chicago with a BA in economics at the School of Business, Stan Tuttleman is well known in local philanthropic circles. He is the father of five and grandfather of twelve. His wife, Edna, has been most active in the museums of the city having served as chairwoman of the I.C.A. of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as chairwoman of the Museum Committee of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She is a graduate of the Academy as well as Temple University, having recently received the coveted Conwell Award.

Stan saw active combat in World War II as a field artillery officer participating in the D-Day invasions of Africa and Sicily as well as the campaigns in Italy and Europe. He served from early 1941 to 1946, receiving several major decorations.

The Tuttlemans co-founded a chain of women's specialty shops, which was later purchased by The Limited. Stan served on the board of Limited Stores from 1978 to 1984. He was chairman of the board of Mast industries and is chairman of Telepartner International, Ebonite International, and Tuttsons Capital Corp.

Among several institutions and agencies that have presented awards to Mr. Tuttleman are the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Gratz College, Temple Adath Israel, American Cancer Society, Allied Jewish Appeal, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the University of Chicago, Northeast High School, Hebrew University and Graduate Hospital.

His community affiliations, like his interests, are numerous and diverse: he is a trustee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he funded the Tuttleman Contemporary Art Gallery; the Franklin Institute, which houses the Tuttleman Omniverse Theater; he is a Governor of Gratz College, where the Tuttleman Library is an important resource for the entire Jewish community; and Temple Adath Israel, graced by the Tuttleman Chapel. He also serves on boards of Creative Artist Network, the free Library of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Mrs. Tuttleman has been a community leader and is associated with a number of other boards. Recently it was announced that a major gift will establish the Tuttleman Learning Center of Temple university. Edna funded the Tuttleman Imaging Center at Graduate Hospital.

The Tuttlemans have supported many educational institutions and, specifically, many libraries, believing that deeply woven into Jewish life is the love of learning and the quest for knowledge. Accordingly, the Zalman Aranne Central Library at Ben-Gurion University will be the beneficiary of their gift. Dinner and journal proceeds will fund this project and the Scholarship Fund at BGU.

Ben-Gurion University, Israel's youngest and most dynamic institution of higher learning, is proud to have the Tuttleman name linked with its future. We salute a true leader, Stanley C. Tuttleman, as a successful business person and a philanthropist whose generosity has been the inspiration to countless others.
